Sony just gave PlayStation fans a lot to talk about.
The September 2026 State of Play and State of Play Japan broadcasts delivered news on more than 30 games, with new trailers, release dates, gameplay reveals, expansions and a few surprises across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Plus.
From Final Fantasy VII Revelation and Marvel’s Wolverine to Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3, Metro 2039, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance and Until Dawn 2, the showcase had something for almost every kind of player.
And yes, there was even a new look at Grand Theft Auto VI hardware.
Here are the biggest announcements from the September 3 State of Play.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation Gets an April 2027 Release Date

The biggest announcement was saved for last.
Square Enix confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch on April 8, 2027, for PlayStation 5. The game is the third and final chapter in the ambitious Final Fantasy VII remake project.
The State of Play presentation gave players an extended look at the game’s larger world. Exploration will include travelling through the skies aboard the Highwind, using chocobos and grappling guns, and moving through towns and landscapes outside the traditional boundaries of the earlier games.
The combat system also received a deeper look, including the game’s FITS system and powerful character synergies.
For PS5 owners waiting for the conclusion of the remake trilogy, this was easily one of the biggest moments of the entire showcase.
Marvel’s Wolverine Launches September 15 on PS5

Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine is almost here.
Sony showed a new launch trailer during State of Play, offering another look at Logan and several of the characters surrounding him. Jean Grey and members of Team X appear alongside new allies and enemies.
The important part is the date: Marvel’s Wolverine launches globally on September 15, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5.
That puts one of the year’s biggest PS5 games just days away from release.
GTA VI Gets Two Limited-Edition PS5 DualSense Controllers

While State of Play was primarily about games, Sony also slipped in something that PlayStation hardware collectors will probably want.
Two limited-edition Grand Theft Auto VI DualSense Wireless Controllers were revealed, inspired by the game’s Vice City setting.
The black and white editions will launch on November 19, with pre-orders opening September 10.
That date is significant because Grand Theft Auto VI also launches on PS5 on November 19, 2026.
For anyone planning to play GTA VI on Sony’s console, this is probably the most extravagant way to do it.
Until Dawn 2 Gets a January 2027 Release Date

The horror continues.
Firesprite confirmed that Until Dawn 2 will launch on January 28, 2027, for PS5.
The new trailer follows the Dead True crew as they investigate supernatural events connected to Blackwood Sanatorium and Akishima Island.
As expected from the franchise, player choices will matter. The presentation showed more of the game’s branching narrative and the consequences attached to decisions made during the story.
Pre-orders are scheduled to open September 10, with multiple editions planned.
Metro 2039 Brings a New Survival Story to PS5

A new Metro adventure is coming.
Metro 2039 will launch on February 4, 2027, for PS5, and the State of Play included the first PS5 Pro gameplay footage.
The game follows a mysterious character known as the Stranger through a post-apocalyptic Moscow. Exploration, survival, combat and stealth all play major roles in the experience.
For fans of atmospheric survival shooters, this could become one of the more interesting PS5 games to watch in 2027.
Gran Turismo 7 Is Getting a Major Spec IV Update

Gran Turismo 7 isn’t finished putting the pedal down.
Sony announced a two-part Spec IV update arriving later in 2026. The update will introduce two new circuits, 12 cars, new modes and additional features, with the content split between October and December.
Among the new additions are Online Drift Trials, Shuffle Races and a Family Mode designed to make the game more approachable for players with different levels of driving experience.
The update also arrives as the Gran Turismo franchise moves toward its 30th anniversary.
Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance Expands the Hunt

Capcom brought a major expansion for Monster Hunter Wilds to State of Play.
Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is coming to PS5 in 2027.
The expansion introduces new monsters, new hunting mechanics, a new location and another chapter for the Expedition Team.
One of the biggest additions is the new Skybound Eyrie area. Players will also encounter new Elder Dragons, including the newly revealed Gundoraja.
A playable demo featuring a hunt against the new monster Arakeeta is also planned for Tokyo Game Show 2026.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 Is Coming to PS5

After years of waiting, Dragon Ball fans finally got another big announcement.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 is coming to PS5 in 2027.
The trailer showed players creating their own hero, developing a custom fighting style and battling powerful opponents.
For players who enjoyed building their own character in the previous games, the basic formula remains familiar while the new game moves the series onto the current PlayStation generation.
Fate/Extra Record Launches on PS4 and PS5

One of the more interesting announcements for fans of Japanese RPGs was the release date for Fate/Extra Record.
The full remake launches on January 28, 2027, for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
The new trailer showed the expanded version of the Moon Holy Grail War along with a revamped Command Card battle system that adds a strategic, deck-building element to combat.
Unlike several of the newer announcements, this one also keeps the PS4 in the picture.
Final Fantasy Resonance Gets a PS5 Demo

Another Final Fantasy game also received attention during the showcase.
Final Fantasy Resonance launches on October 22, 2026, but PS5 players don’t have to wait that long to try it.
A free demo containing the game’s entire first chapter is available now, and save data can be carried over into the full game.
The game uses an HD-2D visual style and combines classic Final Fantasy elements with turn-based combat and an updated job system. Sephiroth also appears as a powerful optional challenge.
Ghost of Yōtei Adds Most Wanted Mode

Ghost of Yōtei is getting another reason to return to its world.
The Most Wanted combat survival mode arrives on October 1 as part of the game’s Complete Edition.
Players will face increasingly difficult waves of enemies and boss encounters while earning weapons, cosmetics and new playable characters.
The State of Play Japan presentation also showed more of the Echoes of Sekigahara expansion, which explores Atsu’s past and her experiences during the Battle of Sekigahara.
PlayStation Plus Gets New Games
Sony also had something for PlayStation Plus subscribers.
The showcase confirmed Mycopunk for the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog later this year. It is a cooperative looter shooter supporting one to four players, with customizable robotic characters, weapons and a fungus-infected planet to clean up.
Several classic games are also coming to the PlayStation Plus Premium Classics Catalog:
- Mega Man X: Command Mission — September
- Dino Crisis 2
- Original Ratchet & Clank
As always, the exact PlayStation Plus lineup can vary by region.
Rhapsody in Scarlet Is a New PS5 Action Game

Konami revealed Rhapsody in Scarlet, a brand-new action adventure for PlayStation 5.
The game mixes 1920s New York, jazz, magic and supernatural beasts.
Players take control of Magus Ellie Myers, who becomes involved in a mystery surrounding a shadowy mafia organization.
The Japanese presentation also showed more of the game’s combat system, including customizable combinations of magic and beast abilities.
Maneater 2 Is Coming to PS5

Remember the game where you played a shark and basically treated humans as snacks?
It’s back.
Maneater 2 is coming to PS5 in 2027.
This time, the action moves to an ultra-luxury private island theme park. Players take control of a bull shark and must eat, explore and evolve their way toward freedom.
It’s still ridiculous.
That’s also kind of the point.
Daba: Land of Water Scar

Daba: Land of Water Scar is another PS5 game coming in Spring 2027.
Developed by Dark Star Games through PlayStation’s China Hero Project, the game follows a clayman travelling through a world where the water has disappeared.
The new trailer showed more of its fantasy setting and exploration-focused gameplay.
Uncanyon Is a New PS5 Puzzle Adventure

From the team behind Maquette comes Uncanyon, a new puzzle adventure for PS5 arriving in 2027.
The game revolves around manipulating different realities and shifting perspectives. Players can blend parallel worlds together and then explore the strange environments created by their combinations.
If you prefer clever puzzles over another giant open-world RPG, this one is worth keeping on the radar.
Where the Seeds Fall Arrives in November
Cygames introduced its new CygamesEdge label alongside Where the Seeds Fall.
The action-adventure game launches on November 5, 2026, for PS5.
The story follows a soldier and a Fell Child as they descend the World Tree toward a Blight-stricken surface filled with ruins, dangerous terrain and environmental hazards.
Gundam Rogue Orbit Launches in March 2027

Gundam Rogue Orbit will launch on March 5, 2027.
The game focuses on fast-paced Gundam combat and extensive customization.
Players can modify their mobile suits, experiment with different weapon types and Tactical Skills, customize colors and even equip a MOD Skin based on the iconic RX-78-2 Gundam.
Hunter’s Moon Brings Folk Horror to PS5

If you’re tired of fighting giant monsters with giant swords, here’s something considerably creepier.
Hunter’s Moon is a first-person historical folk-horror game coming to PS5 on October 25, 2026.
Set during a single night in 17th-century England, the game draws inspiration from the history of English witch hunts.
You play an accused woman trying to survive while avoiding witch hunters and navigating a village under the light of a full moon.
The key gameplay idea is simple: don’t get seen.

Step into feudal Japan as Jin Sakai and experience brutal katana combat, stealth, exploration, and a stunning open world shaped by the Mongol invasion.
What Was the Biggest State of Play Announcement?
There wasn’t one obvious winner for everyone.
For PS5 owners, Marvel’s Wolverine is the immediate headline because it arrives September 15. Final Fantasy VII Revelation is arguably the biggest long-term announcement because it finally has a confirmed April 2027 release date.
For horror fans, Until Dawn 2 and Metro 2039 stand out.
RPG fans have Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Fate/Extra Record, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 and Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance to watch.
And for racing fans, Gran Turismo 7 is getting another substantial update before the end of the year.
The interesting part of this PlayStation Sony showcase is that it wasn’t built around one giant announcement. Instead, Sony spread the attention across a surprisingly wide selection of upcoming PS5 games, Japanese releases, third-party projects, updates and PlayStation Plus content.
The PlayStation 5 Pipeline Is Getting Crowded
The September State of Play also makes one thing pretty clear: the PlayStation 5 is entering a busy period.
With Marvel’s Wolverine arriving this month, GTA VI scheduled for November, several major games landing in early 2027 and projects such as Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance and Maneater 2 waiting later in the year, PS5 owners have plenty on the horizon.
The PlayStation 4 isn’t completely out of the picture either. Fate/Extra Record will support both PS4 and PS5, while PlayStation Plus continues to bring older games into the ecosystem.
For players deciding what game PS5 to buy next, the problem may soon be less about finding something to play—and more about finding enough time to play all of it.
And honestly, that’s a pretty good problem to have.
This article will be updated as more information, trailers and release details become available.
