In a city where cops are bought, fixers are kings, and justice is a joke, River Ward is the exception that proves the rule. Who is River Ward?

Born in Night City, River grew up under the influence of his uncle, a decorated officer who believed the badge represented something sacred. He joined the NCPD to make a difference, but quickly realized the department was riddled with corruption.

By the time V meets him, River is a man on the edge. He is investigating the abduction of his nephew, Randy, a case that eventually leads him to be suspended from the force for insubordination. Unlike the mercenaries of the Afterlife, River lives a modest life in a trailer park, dedicated to raising his sister’s children and seeking justice for victims the city has forgotten.

Role in the Game: The Detective’s Path

River’s questline is widely regarded as one of the darkest and most immersive in Cyberpunk 2077:

  1. The Investigator: River anchors “The Hunt,” a chilling mission involving a serial killer. He and V act as a makeshift detective duo, utilizing braindance tech and old-school police work to track down a predator.

  2. A Study in Integrity: River represents the dying ideal of law enforcement. He refuses bribes, protects witnesses, and serves as a direct contrast to the corporate-owned security forces that dominate the city.

  3. Romance Interest: River is a romance option exclusively for female V. His arc is tender and human, focusing on family dinners and quiet moments of peace far away from the neon skyscrapers.

    The River & V Dynamic

River doesn’t trust easily; he’s been burned by the system too many times. However, V proves to be the partner he always needed—competent and willing to break the rules for the right reasons. Their partnership is built on shared trauma and moral clarity, providing a sense of normalcy in V’s otherwise frantic race against the Relic.
