Opening Microsoft Outlook only to find your Sent Items, Drafts, and Custom Folders<\/strong> have vanished is a heart-stopping moment. If your sidebar only shows the Inbox<\/strong>, don’t panic\u2014your data is almost certainly still there; Outlook is likely having a display or synchronization “glitch.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This usually happens due to a corrupted Navigation Pane, hidden IMAP folders, or a damaged Outlook profile. Here is how to restore your folder hierarchy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solution 1:<\/strong> The “Sanity Check” (Outlook Web)<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before troubleshooting the software, confirm the data exists on the server.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Log in to your email via a browser (e.g., Outlook.com<\/strong> or your company\u2019s webmail).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. If your folders are visible there, the issue is strictly with your Outlook Desktop App<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. If folders are missing there<\/em> too, check your Deleted Items<\/strong> folder; they may have been accidentally moved.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Solution 2:<\/strong> Reset the Navigation Pane & Views<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Outlook uses a configuration file to remember how your folders look. If this file glitches, the sidebar breaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Close Outlook.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Press Windows Key + R<\/strong> to open the Run box.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Type outlook.exe \/resetnavpane<\/code> and hit Enter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. If that doesn’t work, repeat the process but type outlook.exe \/cleanviews<\/code> and hit Enter. (Note: This will reset any custom column views you’ve created).<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Solution 3:<\/strong> Check IMAP Folder Subscriptions<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      If you use an IMAP account (like Gmail or Yahoo), Outlook might have “unsubscribed” from your folders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Right-click your Inbox<\/strong> in the sidebar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. Select IMAP Folders…<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      3. Click the Query<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      4. Look for your missing folders in the list. Select them and click Subscribe<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      5. Click OK<\/strong> and restart Outlook.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        Solution 4:<\/strong> Repair the Data File (ScanPST)<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        If the internal “map” of your data file is broken, the Inbox Repair tool can rebuild it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. Close Outlook.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        2. Search your computer for SCANPST.EXE<\/strong> (usually in C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\root\\Office16<\/code>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        3. Run the tool, click Browse<\/strong> to select your .pst<\/code> or .ost<\/code> file, and click Start<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        4. Repair any errors found and relaunch Outlook.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          Solution 5:<\/strong> Create a New Profile<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          If the folders are still missing, your profile\u2014the link between Windows and your mail server\u2014is likely corrupted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          1. Go to Control Panel > Mail > Show Profiles<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          2. Click Add<\/strong>, name it Outlook_New<\/code>, and re-add your email account.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          3. Set this new profile as the default and open Outlook.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
