by Ankita Sharma

In the UK, when writing a cheque, the amount in words should be written clearly and without any room for alteration. Here’s how to do it properly:

✅ Steps to Write the Amount in Words (UK Format)

  1. Start with the pounds amount:
    • Write the pound amount in words, followed by the word “pounds”.
    • Example: £125.45One hundred twenty-five pounds
  2. Add the pence amount if applicable:
    • Use the word “and” before the pence.
    • Write the pence as a number followed by “pence”.
    • Example: £125.45One hundred twenty-five pounds and 45 pence
  3. If it’s a round pound amount (no pence):
    • Still write “pounds only” at the end.
    • Example: £80.00Eighty pounds only
  4. Fill the entire line with a line or dashes:
    • This prevents tampering.
    • Example:
One hundred twenty-five pounds and 45 pence ---------------------
