The common myth is that Midjourney doesn’t support negative prompts. The truth: It does, but you have to stop talking to it like a human and start using its specific syntax. Here is how to actually banish unwanted objects from your images.
Why “Don’t” and “No” Fail in Midjourney
Midjourney uses “Tokenization.” If you type “a man with no beard,” the AI sees the token [beard]. It doesn’t understand the “no” before it. It simply thinks, “Oh, he wants a beard!” and adds one.
To subtract an element, you must use the --no parameter or Negative Weights.
Method 1: The --no Parameter (The “Eraser”)
This is the most effective way to remove specific objects, styles, or defects.
- Syntax:

Pro Rules for --no:
- Placement: Always put it at the very end of your prompt.
- No Colons: Do not use

If you want an element to be present but “whisper-quiet” in the background, use negative weights.
